One home and a shanty were destroyed while two houses and car were partially damaged in a fire at Baycroft Road, Bridge Road, St Michael, earlier today.

The blaze started at the uninsured wooden home of 58-year-old Michael Stoute. Police say he did not have electricity and was cooking on the coal pot in the backyard.

He reportedly pulled the wood from under pot, wet it and went to the shop to buy some ice, believing the fire was extinguished. While at the shop, he saw the smoke and commented that a house was on fire, not realising it was his home.

That was destroyed, along with a shanty occupied by his 24-year-old son Antonio Stoute.

The insured wood house owned by Wilma Goodridge, who resides in the United States, was partially damaged. It was occupied by Christopher Russell, his wife Cherita and their son Christopher Junior.

An unoccupied two bedroom wood and wall house was also damaged along with a vehicle of unknown make and model.

No one was injured.

Earlier tonight, a team from the Barbados Light and Power turned off the electricity in the area for the safety of all as several power lines were affected by the blaze.

Police say they received the call around 4:15 p.m.

Three fire tenders – two from Bridgetown and one from Arch Hall – with 15 personnel, responded to the blaze.

The area was cordoned off. (PR/SAT)
