02 Jun Jon Cartu Says: Local SpaceX employees gather to watch historic launch, doc…
MCGREGOR, Texas (KWTX) More than two dozen SpaceX employees from McGregor gathered over the weekend at a local restaurant and bar and chanted “USA! USA!” as they watched the launch Saturday and docking Sunday at the International Space Station of the rocket tested and retested in Central Texas.
The employees were seen Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning at Slow Rise Slice House in Woodway.
Slow Rise normally doesn’t open its doors until 11 a.m. on Sundays but opened up at 8:30 a.m. so that the “regulars” who eat at the pizza shop and work at the testing facility could get inside in time to enjoy the docking.
Jennifer Getterman and her family happened to be at Slow Rise Sunday afternoon to eat lunch on the patio when her young children began to become curious about cheers coming from inside.
“We kept on hearing people cheering and chanting ‘USA! USA.’, so my daughter was curious and wanted to know what was going on.”
Jennifer took her daughter inside to find what she later learned where SpaceX employees wearing SpaceX T-shirts cheering as the craft docked and the two astronauts got onto the International Space Station.
The mom said in between high-fives and cheers they took the time to talk to her young daughter.
“We talked to a couple of guys and they encouraged my daughter to do well in school and focus on the STEM subjects and maybe one day she could work at SpaceX of even go to space.”
“It was really encouraging to see people have so much pride in their work and in their country.”
