A variety of local and state agencies will be in action on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Bellingham International Airport practicing a full-scale emergency response exercise.

The practice operation will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and mostly will take place at the airport, according to a news release from the Port of Bellingham.

Planned exercises include more than 50 local volunteers and emergency responders practicing a mass casualty response from an airplane crash, according to the release. The exercises won’t interfere with the normal operations of the airport, which will remain open.

Since Whatcom County is in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the exercise activities will be simulated or occur remotely.

The drill is required every three years at the airport by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Dave Gallagher has covered the Whatcom County business community since 1998. Retail, real estate, jobs and port redevelopment are among the topics he covers.
